I reblogged the David Foster Wallace “This is water” video because I don’t like it. I feel like the videomakers took a really important message and turned it into advertising. It’s very slick, there’s a cute side-story about the guy and girl in the grocery store, and I feel like it hits the wrong notes for DFW’s subtle message. When I read the original DFW piece, it imparts a feeling like “this is going to be tedious but you’re alive, remember that. There’s something amazing going on but you’re so surrounded by it that you’re going to forget it unless you stay aware.” The message in the video is more one of “boy THIS sucks!” “I’ll say!” “Wanna do it?” and: that’s for selling Red Bull.

Anyway I reblogged it because sometimes I like to go back and really try to understand why I don’t like something, even though I spend most of my time concentrating on finding things I DO like and spending my time here appreciating that they were made.

Here it is as created by LA graphics and design team, The Glossary. Quite a nice job they’ve done, though was it really necessary for the guy and the cute girl to be all flirty in the store? Maybe so. Maybe not. Maybe judging is a waste of idle time.

I’ve painted one of these beauties before and had quite a lot of fun with it even if suckers are possibly the most tedious thing in the world to draw, let alone paint. Apparently, when I’m sick I like to torture myself by reliving that tediousness by drawing even more of them. Fun octopus fact: the only hard party of their body is their beak… so if the beak fits, the whole octopus fits. It’s kind of awesome.
